Career vs. Motherhood

I love my career, I get to go to work every day knowing that I'm actually saving lives.  I love to figure out the best way to solve a problem, and coming up with new methods to do things better.

I'm the Executive Director of a small non-profit.  Craig's Doors.  Our mission is to help people who are homeless to find housing, and to keep them safe through the winter with our Emergency Homeless Shelter - Craig's Place.

Being an Executive Director means putting in long hours at the office, being available via phone 24.7, and continuously learning new things.  I do not have a grant writer, development director, or an HR department, so I have to add in those tasks as well.  One year ago, I was putting in an average of 60 hours of work each week.

Then my life changed this summer - My older sister and her 3 kids moved in with me.

I am now Auntie Mom to a 8 year old boy with autism, a 5 year old girl with autism, and a 3 year old boy.

Overnight my life and my career has changed forever.

Pre-Summer, my job was my whole world.  Now, my world consists of three little people: David, Leah, and Matthew.

In this blog I will be exploring the challenges that come from the two missions in my life: raising my niece and nephews to hopefully some day live independently.  And helping adults struggling with homelessness to someday live independently.

I hope to post regularly, but if I miss a few weeks please assume I am busy saving the world.

Blessings from an Antie Executive.
